Walking Is Better than Running?

Quick blog today as I have a tonne of work to do!

Yes! In some ways walking is better than running, it all depends on you.

If, like me, you are pretty shocking at running (10 minutes is my max on a good day), walking for an hour is way better than running for 10-15 minutes everyday.

This is because, when you are running until you have used up all of it, all you're burning off are your carbohydrates. If you proceed to run after this you will begin to burn of other calories you have consumed during the day thus losing weight...in the long run (no pun intended).

Now I don't want to put a damper on your day, but some people that are not naturally gifted in the realm of athletics (me) will never be as good as a pro-athlete. Now most people say it's because they do hours of training. Well it is partly, but I could do the same amount of training as Mo Farah and still not be as good as him because it is all down to genetics!

I won't bore you with all the biological details, but people have a different amount of slow twitch muscle fibres and fast twitch muscle fibres (don't take the names literally, they don't mean what you think). People with predominantly slow twitch muscle fibres are well suited to running marathons, whereas those with more fast twitch muscle fibres (there are two types a and b), type a are most suited to 800m or basketball whereas type b is more 100m swim race, shot put or a golf drive (anaerobic activities)

So for those of us that are not very athletic, running a marathon, or less extreme, running for just half an hour is extremely difficult. You are better off walking (power walking if you can) for an hour if you want to burn calories/fat as running for a short period of time will simply burn your carbohydrates and not the cheeky chocolate bar you ate. However building it up so eventually you can run for 30-60 mins is definitely worth it as running does burn more than walking.

For some running for long periods of time is quite easy, so if you can definitely do and build it up also to perhaps running more distance in an allotted time rather than just seeing how long you can run for.

*Tip: when walking add weights to increase the resistance to make your workout harder and get better results!

My Tips for a Good Workout

Hey guys, so when working out there are a few things you can do to get the most out of your workout.
Here we go:

  • Have something to eat before - Eating something, even as small as a banana or a few grapes, will give your metabolism the kickstart it needs and help you endure your workout.
  • Plan your workout - Whether you are going into a gym or just doing some exercises planning your routine will help your workout become more efficient and effective.
  • Warm up PROPERLY - Warming up is a vital part of your workout. I know everyone hates it but it really helps you to start your exercise. A proper warm up should leave you with your heart rate slightly higher than average, a little bit sweaty and raring to go!
  • Water - During your workout you need to replenish the sweat coming out of your body by drinking water. This doesn't mean drinking gallons of water but if you fancy a sip or have been working out super hard for an hour go for it! Only you know how thirsty you are during a workout. However post workout you MUST drink water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Difficulty - When working out most people think they know their maximum capability, however pushing yourself that extra minute, or extra weight or extra few seconds can make a lot of difference in long run for workout and esteem.
  • When to exercise - Exercising first thing in the morning is a lot easier than later in the day. Throughout the course of the day you become more and more tired and come up with more and more excuses. This also means we can say we have accomplished (at least) one thing today which will make us feel better.
  • Company - Exercising with someone else is a lot more fun than by yourself, whether it means going to a class, with a friend/family member or simply walking/running with your dog. Also working out with someone else gives you the motivation to do it as they are relying on you to work out with them.
  • Cool down - After your workout you MUST cool down, your muscles will be nice and warm and thus you will get the ultimate stretch, meaning not as much aching tomorrow!
  • Motivation - Motivation is the key to working out, without it you won't even begin the first tip, so  find something that motivates you, whether it be fitting into a dress for your wedding, trimming down a little, getting bikini body ready (not so much now) or simply decide to get fitter. Use the motivation, whatever it may be, to go into your workout guns loaded and boss it!

New Blog

Hey guys,

So I know I haven't blogged much recently, or at all for that matter, but after a very long summer of relaxing in Portugal with my girls and going on a conservation trip to Costa Rica I am back and ready to blog.

I've decided to go in a slightly different direction with my blog. I will continue to write about beauty but also begin to write about health/fitness. Now I am no expert in this field, (please do not take my advice for health issues -- go see a doctor), however as I am now a A-Level PE student I feel as though I should become healthier/fitter or in my eyes thinner, as over summer I may have eaten one too many ice creams.

So starting next week I will be posting twice a week, one beauty and one fitness blog. I know I have promised more regular blogs before but now I have settled into the school year and my routine I am focused and really excited to start writing again.

Hope you all enjoy my new venture into the slight unknown...

The Perfect Summer Nails

Sprinkle of Pink

I love pink on my nails and adding sparkles can give your nails the extra "pzazz" they need. I like to keep some subtly to my nails which is why  I use a sprinkle of glitter to my nails.

I think pink is the perfect summer colour and this look is really cute and fun and is perfect for holiday use.

Using Barry-M's #317 "Dragon" as my pretty pink base, I then coated my nails with #349 "Rose Quartz" also by Barry-M. These two polishes give a really girly, sparkly finish and look great when they sparkle in the sunlight.

For a new look I used "electric avenue" from nails inc. on the tips of my nails. This gives a french manicure a different twist that looks summery and fabulous.

*Tip: be sure to apply a base coat before starting and a top coat before you use a different polish

Which Maybelline Mascara Is Right For You?

The Falsies Volum' Express (Flared)

I really like this mascara. For me it does exactly what it says on the bottle. Flares. My lashes literally grow an inch. Ok so maybe 2-5 cm but that's a lot on your lashes. I feel this mascara gives more length than volume, but nonetheless it is great. It is a drier mascara, which I tend not to like but for some reason this mascara is an exception to the rule.

I love the brush of this mascara. It is slightly curved in order to flare and then lengthen your lashes. I also liked the directions for application to get optimum results.

Usually will cost £7.99 at drugstores such as Superdrug.
